A recent video circulating on social media shows a speed flyer crashing into steep terrain after misjudging his glide path—an incident that pilot Matt Johnson says could have easily ended much worse.

The crash occurred in February, but Johnson, who walked away with minimal injuries, shared the video this week to highlight the dangers of flying while mentally fatigued.

“Let this video serve as a warning: always pay close attention to your mental state when flying or participating in any high-risk sport,” Johnson wrote.

He admitted to ignoring signs of exhaustion and dehydration before the flight, leading to poor judgment and a critical error that left him stranded in dangerous terrain. He was rescued by the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon and emergency crews, and later treated at Sallanches Hospital in France.

Since the incident, Johnson says he’s been more intentional about assessing his mental and physical condition before taking off. “There are always more days to fly,” he added.
