Gordon Garlock from Portland, Oregon has been on a 41-year journey in which he has skied every single month during that period.ย It is an amazing accomplishment and one that any athlete or fan would respect and admire. He made the trip from the Pacific Northwest to the Northeast late in September to keep his streak alive by skiing atย Big SNOWย in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Big SNOW is the only indoor ski/snowboard facility in North America and is open year-round.
Unfortunately, Garlock’s hometown mountain of Mt. Hood did not have any snow to keep the streak going for September and October.ย However, this was not going to stop Garlock and he made the cross-country trip to make sure the streak did not end. It was the first time the 74-year-old Garlock had ever skied the East. He planned to ski the last days in September and the first days in October to account for those two months. The goal and hope was that Mother Nature would provide enough snow in November at Mt. Hood for him to continue his streak for the remainder of the season in Oregon. Timberline Ski Resort is where Garlock has worked for many years and typically opens in the middle of November.

Garlock has been a long-time ski instructor and it was apparent by his upbeat and positive attitude when skiing at Big SNOW. The excitement and thrill a person feels the first time they ski down the mountain is something that no one ever forgets.ย Watching him ski down the slope with his huge smile and enthusiasm is something that reminds us all of the love we have for the sport of skiing. There is no doubt that Garlock’s love for skiing will keep his streak going for as long as he can. He did admit that he will evaluate the situation next September if there is no snow on Mt. Hood again next year. 41 years is a very long time to keep any type of streak going and perhaps the end of the streak is inevitable. Hopefully, it won’t end any time soon and other skiers and riders will have the opportunity to meet and ski with the legendary Gordon Garlock.
