VIDEO: Baby Grey Whale Gets Beached While Surfing “The Wedge” in Newport Beach, CA

A baby gray whale washes up near #TheWedge in Newport Beach, swims back out to safety Friday afternoon – Holly Griffith, an avid ocean and marine mammal enthusiast, had just plunked down on the sand to watch body boarders take on massive waves at the popular #NewportBeach surf spot, when she and others saw something gray and ‘blobby’ in the water. “We looked out there and saw what we think was a baby gray whale,” Griffith said. “All of a sudden everyone looked away from the bodyboarders and watch it. The waves just kept pushing him up toward the sand. I was like, ‘How are we going to get it back?’” By the time Newport Beach Marine Safely Battalion Chief Brent Jacobsen was in route responding to the whale, it had already made its way back into the ocean. “It was a five-minute event,” he said. “Luckily, it resolved itself. Surfing “The Wedge” in Newport Beach, CA is so fun that even baby Grey Whales are trying it now.  Just like many surfers and boogie boarders after a gnarly set, this baby Grey Whale got temporarily beached on Saturday while surfing some waves.

It must have been a huge shock to suddenly see a freakin’ whale right on the beach.  Especially such a popular beach in the heart of southern California.

After temporarily being beached this baby whale made his/her way back out to sea to live happily thereafter.

Very wild.  Very cool.

Watching the waves at the wedge when out of no where a whale drops in on a wave! Luckily, it found its way back out to the ocean. #wedgewhale @dirtyoldwedge
