Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, two of the most dominant names in ski racing history, might compete together for the first time in the newly introduced team Alpine Combined event at the 2025 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. The U.S. Ski Team announced its 21-athlete roster on Friday, January 31, featuring a mix of seasoned champions and rising stars set to take on the world’s best from February 4-16.

Shiffrin, already the most decorated skier of her era, heads to Saalbach with 99 World Cup victories and 14 World Championship medals, seven of them gold. Vonn, who retired in 2019 as the most successful women’s speed skier in history, is making a surprise comeback to the sport’s biggest stage this season. Her last World Championships appearance six years ago ended with a bronze medal in Åre, Sweden.

The duo could even team up as the new dream team to race in the Alpine Combined, a discipline that tests both speed and technical ability. The event, debuting in this year’s championships, pairs two skiers—one competing in Downhill, the other in Slalom—with their combined times determining the winners. If Vonn races the Downhill portion and Shiffrin takes on the Slalom, it would mark a historic partnership between two of the sport’s biggest icons and most successful skiers of all time.

Beyond the sport’s biggest names, the U.S. team includes breakout stars like Lauren Macuga, who won her first World Cup super-G this season in St. Anton, and Katie Hensien, who finished just off the podium in the season-opening giant slalom in Sölden. Olympic silver medalist Ryan Cochran-Siegle and Jared Goldberg lead the men’s speed team, while River Radamus will be a top contender in the giant slalom.

U.S. Ski & Snowboard leadership expressed confidence in the team’s depth. “This has been an excellent season for both our men’s and women’s teams, with multiple podiums across all disciplines,” said Anouk Patty, the organization’s chief of sport. CEO Sophie Goldschmidt echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the athletes’ resilience and dedication.

The championships, which will take place on a single venue in the Austrian resort Saalbach-Hinterglemm, will be available for fans to watch live on Infront’s skiandsnowboard.live, with select events airing on NBC via tape delay.
