On Monday, March 1st, 2021 I’d made up my mind.
I wasn’t going to go up high due to the Considerable avalanche danger, rapidly warming temperatures, and rising risk of both wind slab and persistent slab avalanches.
I decided on a mellower, lower line that I knew had been skied up and that I hoped got a mini refresh via the wind and 1″ of new snow the night before.
I rolled into it with confidence, then got humbled quickly.
The chute was beat up and the snow was already cooked by the sun and the layer underneath was firm.
It was still really fun, just a bit more work than I’d anticipated.
The aesthetics of the chute were dazzling.
At the bottom of the chute I looked back up and thought:
“Was this my last run of the season in the Tetons?”
It might have been, but I really hope it wasn’t.
Fingers crossed for a couple more great storms in the Tetons before springtime’s grip becomes overbearing.
