So far this winter, snow has been hard to come by in New Zealand for the corporate ski fields. Coronet Peak, one of the ‘Three Peaks’ run by NZ Ski and based in Queenstown, opened on the 16th of June but only several days later had to close due to a lack of snow. Mt Hutt (Three Peaks) which is based in the Canterbury Region and commonly known as “Mt Shut,” opened on the 10th of June and closed a week after opening for the same reason. Both resorts are re-opening on the second of July after cold temperatures and snow-makers working around the clock.
Both Remarkables (‘Three Peaks’) and Cardrona Alpine Resort have been restricted to minimal lift access due to a lack of snow as well. Treble Cone (‘TC’) announced earlier today, that the ski field is intending to open tomorrow, July 4, 2023. The Triple Treat run will be ready to go but the snow cover is thin and the run will be fairly narrow at the bottom, but is groomed and skiable.
In the most recent snowfall, on the evening of June 30th, The Remarkables, Coronet, and Cardrona all got a dusting of 5 cm (1.9 inches). On the other hand, TC missed out due to the storm being a southerly one. TC only benefits from south-westerlies storms which aren’t as common during El Nino. Regardless, The NZ snow community has its fingers crossed for consistent cold temperatures and precipitation in the coming forecasts.
