Skiing in summer isn’t just a dream in Italy’s Bormio area—it’s a high-altitude reality, thanks to the Passo Stelvio summer-only ski resort on the Stelvio Glacier. As one of only six summer-only ski resorts in the world, it boasts the largest skiable area in the Alps open during the warmer months. The glacier is set to reopen from May 31 to November 2, 2025, offering skiers the unique thrill of carving turns beneath the summer sun. Passo Stelvio can only open after the access road, the famous Stelvio Pass, has been cleared of the winter season’s snow. The Stelvio Pass is scheduled to open this coming Friday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m.
Set against the dramatic backdrop of Stelvio National Park and the towering peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale range, the glacier delivers a truly stunning alpine experience. The area is ideal for both seasoned skiers and first-timers, with 20 kilometers (about 12.4 miles) of slopes catering to all skill levels. Modern lift systems—including cable cars and ski lifts—serve terrain that stretches from 2,758 meters (9,049 feet) at the Stelvio Pass—whose iconic road celebrates its bicentennial this year—up to 3,450 meters (11,319 feet) on Mount Cristallo. While advanced skiers will appreciate the vertical drop and technical terrain, beginners can take advantage of expert instruction from Bormio’s renowned ski schools. The glacier also features dedicated routes for ski mountaineering.
As tradition goes, elite ski athletes from around the world will be training on the Stelvio this summer. Last season, Olympic champion Sofia Goggia made her comeback on these very slopes after a major knee injury—rekindling the sensations that led her back to victory this past season. Like her, numerous top-level and youth-category athletes are expected to return to Bormio, which is preparing to host events in Alpine Skiing and Ski Mountaineering for the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
