Selwyn Snow Resort, Australia, announced today, September 4, 2023, that the resort will be closing for the season. The small resort in the state of New South Wales is Australia’s most northern ski resort and as such is particularly vulnerable to the elements.
On January 4, 2020, the small Australian resort was burned to the ground after bushfires swept through the Kosciuszko National Park. The resorts of Thredbo and Perisher were also under imminent threat, but a change in wind spared those two resorts. Selwyn Snow Resort, however, was not so lucky and suffered significant fire damage during what is referred to in Australia as the ‘Black Summer.’
Following the bushfires, the resort took three seasons to reopen as the pandemic slowed down reconstruction. Last year the resort was slated to reopen but early May snow meant that essential electricity work could not be finalized and the small resort had to sit out one of the best seasons in a decade. The resort finally opened this year, but the Australian ski season has seen below average snow falls and above average temperatures, making operations for this resort very difficult.
“Thank you for your support during the 2023 snow season!
After one of the most challenging snow seasons in decades, Selwyn Snow Resort would like to thank our valued guests & staff for their support during our first season of operations after the Black Summer bushfires.
Despite our best efforts, a combination of fewer natural snowfalls, heavy rain events and warmer nights preventing snowmaking mean unfavorable weather conditions have brought Selwyn’s 2023 snow season to an end.
The decision to close for the season was not made lightly, but the safety and enjoyment of our visitors has always been our top priority and the current conditions do not allow for that.
We can’t wait to welcome you back for what we hope is a bumper snow season in 2024!
Furthermore, Selwyn Snow Resort also announced that it will freeze the online price of all Lift Ticket, Toboggan, Snowsports School & Equipment Hire prices for the 2024 snow season. The resort is committed to being New South Wales most affordable resort and want to make snowsport accessible to everyone.
