The small ski resort Ben Lomond in Tasmania, Australia, kicked off the Australian ski season today, Friday, June 6. While it was only one t-bar operating and skiers had to dismount half-way, this did not deter some diehard skiers and boarders from ringing in the Australian ski season.
Tomorrow, June 7, Thredbo, Perisher, Hotham, and Mount Buller will open skiing and boarding with very limited terrain. Thredbo announced it will be running the Easy Does It chair lift on Friday Flats as well as some carpets. Perisher will be operating the Village 8 and some carpets. Hotham will run the Summit Trainer and Pup’s Playground carpets, while Buller will run Bourke Street.
Falls Creek will not be open for skiing and boarding, but will watch the snowfall and adapt quickly.
Mount Baw Baw will be open for tobogganing and snow play, but no lifts will be running for the King’s Birthday Long Weekend.
Selwyn and Charlotte Pass will not open until June 21.
“We’re thrilled to welcome guests back to Perisher after Mother Nature brought some snow and colder temperatures in the past week. We look forward to watching guests discover, or re-discover, their moment at Australia’s largest ski resort,” said Nathan Butterworth, Vice President and General Manager of Perisher Ski Resort. ”Our teams have worked tirelessly to prepare the resort, and we can’t wait to share the magic of the mountains with everyone this weekend, as well as during what will be a history-making season thanks to the opening of our highly anticipated Mt Perisher 6 chairlift.” Please note, that the Mount Perisher 6-chair will not open until July 25.
With up to 60 centimeters (24 inches) of snow forecast for the King’s Birthday Long Weekend, more terrain will open across resorts.
