The Saharan town of Ain Sefra town in Algeria has this week seen snowfall for just the fifth time in 42 years. The last snowfalls were 1979, 2016, 2018, and 2021.
The Atlas Mountains surround Ain Sefra, known as the “Gateway to the Desert.” The Sahara desert, which covers most of Northern Africa, has seen temperatures fluctuate over the past few hundred thousand years, but snow and ice are extremely rare.
The temperature in the Algerian town dropped to 28°F overnight.
