The 33rd annual Cushing Crossing returned to Palisades Tahoe, California, on Saturday, May 10, bringing a riot of color, creativity, and springtime energy to Cushing Pond. Under bluebird skies, competitors-decked out in everything from inflatable unicorns to superhero capes-attempted the legendary pond skim, cheered on by hundreds of spectators and a panel of celebrity judges.
Widely recognized as the original pond-skimming contest, Cushing Crossing has become a rite of passage for spring skiers and riders in Tahoe. The event’s unique charm lies in its blend of athleticism and absurdity: participants must not only make it across the icy pond on skis, snowboards, or other snow-sliding contraptions, but also impress judges with their costumes and style. Points are awarded for both creativity and a successful crossing, with prizes from sponsors such as Yeti, Smith, Dakine, and Darn Tough awaiting the most memorable performances.
The crowd lined the banks of Cushing Pond near the base of KT-22, bracing for big splashes and bigger laughs.
