A decade after closing its gates, Nutt Hill Winter Park, Wisconsin, will officially begin its transformation back into Sheboygan County’s premier winter recreation destination. Community members, city officials, and project partners will gather for a groundbreaking ceremony at noon on June 19, marking the start of nearly $2.3 million in upgrades set to welcome skiers, snowboarders, and tubers for the winter 2025 season.
The revitalization, spearheaded by the nonprofit Cheese Capital Winter Park (CCWP), represents a new chapter for the beloved hill, which last hosted organized winter activities in 2014. “A lot of people in Plymouth grew up coming to the hill and really enjoying it,” said Joe Van Derven, who leads the effort to restore the park to its former glory.
Once complete, Nutt Hill will feature six snow tubing lanes, three ski and snowboard runs, and a state-of-the-art conveyor lift to bring visitors to the summit. The facility will also boast three snow-making machines, advanced grooming equipment, and a newly enclosed warming shelter designed in partnership with students from Plymouth High School.
The project has galvanized support across Sheboygan County, with CCWP raising over 90% of its capital campaign goal through donations from individuals and local businesses, including Sargento Foods, Masters Gallery Foods, and Sartori Cheese. Plymouth will retain ownership of Nutt Hill, while CCWP will oversee operations under a five-year lease agreement, with the city providing an annual payment to help cover expenses.
Nutt Hill’s reopening is expected to draw families and winter sports enthusiasts from across the region, offering a convenient and modern venue for snow tubing, skiing, and snowboarding. The park will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with snowmaking limited to 15 days per season in accordance with local regulations.
An open house is scheduled for October 10 at the Plymouth Art Center, where residents can learn more about the park’s new features, view renderings, and meet the committee behind the project.
