NOAA has just released their official outlookย for the month of October in the USA. ย NOAA’s forecasts continue to display a strong tendency towards El Nino patterns despite El Nino chances of occurring sliming down each month. ย In NOAA’s latest El Nino update, they’re giving El Nino a 65% chance of occurring during the North American winter.

Octoberย snowstorms get us excited about ski season, often allow for some backcountry skiing, and help the early bird ski resorts open their doors. ย October snowfalls can also lead to rotten winter snowpacks via faceting in the Rockies and elsewhere.

October is a strange, almost nervous month in the USA. ย Big questions are asked and sometimes answered in October:

Does early season snowfall say anything about the coming season? ย

Might we have an early winter? ย

Will this early snow ruin our snowpack?

Winter doesn’t truly get going in earnest until November, so in general, we can all just relax. ย That said, we wouldn’t mind the snow machine turning on in October and never stopping…
