Mikaela Shiffrin, at just 24-years old and currently the world’s most successful skier, might be in the prime of her career but she is already thinking about retiring.
Already on track to break every alpine record going, in an interview with USA Todayย she said she doesnโt see herself skiing into her 30s.ย It will totally depend on her health, and if she’s still enjoying it.
โI guess I donโt really have a timeline,โ Shiffrin said during a conference call.ย โI donโt know if Iโm going to make it until Iโm 30. Or if Iโm going to retire before that, if itโs going to be after that. I probably donโt see myself going well beyond 30.
On her way to her third overall World Cup title last year Shiffrin won 17 World Cup races, smashing the previous record, and her victory in the Super-G at Lake Louise made her the first skier ever to win in all six disciplines.ย
Currently sixth on the list of careerย World Cup victories with 60, Shiffrin will pass Ingemar Stenmarkโs record of 86 before the Beijing Olympics in 2022ย if she keeps up her current pace.
Makes perfectly good sense. She has sustained no serious injuries. She trains hard to avoid being injured. She does not take crazy risks. If she can keep this up Shiffrin will certainly surpass Ingemar Stenmark’s 86. What I like about her the most is the message of hard work, no drugs and no booze. Good role model for young people and adults for that matter.
