Recently, the medals for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Winter Games were unveiled. The 2022 Winter Olympic Games are taking place in Beijing, China.

According to ESPN, the design of Olympic Medals typically reflect the host country and its culture. The design of the medals features the iconic five Olympic rings in the center. Additionally, the words “XXIV Olympic Winter Games Beijing” are engraved onto the front of the medal.  On the back of the medal, ice, snow, and cloud patterns can be seen.

While the medal includes significant original Olympic graphics, the medal still incorporates some of Beijing’s culture and traditions. The medal is based on “Chinese ancient jade concentric circle pendants.” The Olympic Committee states that the medals are named “Tong Xin.” This name is translated to “together as one.” The full Chinese name of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Games, along with the emblem of the Beijing 2022 Games can be found engraved on the back of the medals. The carved designs throughout the medals are based on traditional Chinese patterns.

The Paralympic Winter Games will use the same design, except the medals will translate “Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games” into English and Braille.

Beijing’s 2022 medals resemble their medals for the 2008 Summer Games. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games will begin on February 4, 2022, and the Paralympic Games will begin on March 4, 2022.
