Brandon Hughes, 26, of Sacramento, drowned after a cliff jumping accident at Rubicon Point at D.L. Bliss State Park near South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s office.
After jumping off a cliff into Lake Tahoe, Brandon did not resurface. Sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Prencipe said authorities were called around 2 pm when Search and Rescue efforts were initiated and the man was located and later recovered by the EDSO Dive Team under 65-feet of water.
Officials were unclear of the exact height of the cliff where Hughes had jumped, and that it’s yet to be determined whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident as they await a toxicology report.
Cliff jumping is a very popular pastime in Lake Tahoe and its surrounding lakes and rivers.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The body of a 26-year-old man from Sacramento was found in 65-feet of water on Saturday afternoon after he had been reportedly jumping from a cliff at Lake Tahoe’s Rubicon Point.
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) responded to a call at 2:00 p.m. from the U.S. Coast Guard about a possible drowning after the man jumping did not resurface. Search and Rescue efforts were initiated and the man was located and later recovered by the EDSO Dive Team.
Several agencies on the lake responded and aided in the search.
The victim has been identified as Brandon Hughes.
The next of kin notifications have been completed. The cause of death will be determined after the completion of an autopsy.
