Mammoth ski resort in California got 5″ of snow yesterday during the day. It stopped snowing in the afternoon, but Chair 23 wasn’t open yesterday and we had high hopes.
The Squaw crew ended up on the 1st chair on Chair 23 this morning and we weren’t quite sure what to expect. You could tell that there was likely some reef under the new 5″ of snow, but we hoped that we’d stay off the reef beneath.
It was damn cold this morning. 19ºF in the morning rising into the 20s but not out of them. 26ºF on the summit at noon today. The wind was wasn’t raging, but added significantly to the cold at a consistent 25mph form the southwest.
Once Chair 23 opened around 8:15am, we charged down and got our answer. The snow on top was good, but the old hard snow underneath was felt every turn. It was almost a perfect powder day, but not quite. A strong effort for May 15th, though.
After that first run we stuck to the groomers and they were perfect. Packed powder groomers made for fun, fast laps off chair three for the rest of the morning.
Tomorrow should be great once they groom the fresh snow on the Chair 23 groomer. Heck, all the groomers will be good tomorrow.
The forecast in Mammoth continues to look stormy, but without any big snowfalls. This should keep things nice and wintery into next week.

was there Saturday. the snow warmed a little (sunny), consolidated some, blended into the underlying reef and softened it, and skied really well. all the chutes off 23 were in play. but of course we stayed on the groomers, and recommend them highly also, Miles.
Sharpy, we agree. Yesterday was much better due to the warming. Skied off-piste on 23 all day and was exhausted afterward. Lots of different types of snow. Glad you were out there.
Good spring skiing last Sun & Mon off Chair 23. (Gondola ran on Sun -Climax was good.) This was
2 days after the 12-18in of new snow. Back to winter now! They should make Memorial Day!
Your last line about groomers (on a powder day) got me worried. You’re starting to sound a lot like Yimmers!
