Utah Department of Transportation ‘UDOT’ was forced to close Little Cottonwood Canyon due to a massive mudslide that spilled onto State Route 210. The mudslide crossed the road earlier today and is about 4 feet deep and 100 feet wide. The mud is mixed with large woody debris and the road through the canyon will remain closed to all travel until further notice as it is currently unsafe for crews to clear the road.
Crews will assess hazard and debris flows over the next 24 hours, but there is currently no estimated opening time, so please check UDOT’s Twitter account before traveling.
The Utah Department of Public Services provided a helicopter for some aerial reconnaissance of today’s mudslide. The situation is evolving and is currently being assessed but be prepared for extensive road closures.
Big Cottonwood Canyon was closed today from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for avalanche control but reopened for traffic after that time window. Currently, no avalanche closures are planned for State Route 190, but please be aware, that closures are possible at any time, so please be prepared and check road status before heading to the canyons.
