A landslide has forced the closure of U.S. Highway 6 between Loveland Ski Area and Arapahoe Basin, a high-alpine route popular with travelers and recreationists in Coloradoโs central Rockies. The Colorado Department of Transportation closed the road early Sunday morning around 5:30 a.m. after a section of mountain slope gave way near mile marker 226 on Loveland Pass. The debris field, described by CDOT as โstill active,โ measured approximately 100 feet wide and 15 to 20 feet deep.
In a statement Monday, CDOT said the slide was triggered by saturated ground conditions due to ongoing snowmelt. Material above the roadway loosened and collapsed, covering the pass and prompting immediate safety closures in both directions. No injuries were reported, and no vehicles were caught in the slide, according to early reports.
Loveland Pass, which connects Summit and Clear Creek counties, is a key alternate route to the Eisenhower Tunnel for both commuters and tourists. The pass is also frequently used by cyclists, hikers, and backcountry skiers. CDOT crews are continuing to monitor the slope for additional movement and have not provided an estimated timeline for reopening the road. Geotechnical assessments are underway, and the agency urged the public to avoid the area until conditions stabilize.
Travelers are advised to use Interstate 70 as an alternative route.
