Report from January 4, 2023
Yesterday I got up and out at Kicking Horse, BC with Lee.
I’d forgotten how much I love this place…
I spent 2 months here living in Mary’s Motel in Golden, BC back in 2018 and it was pure bliss.
Kicking Horse itself is sick, legendary Rogers Pass is right there, and the Kicking Horse sidecountry is wild…
We decided to stay inbounds yesterday and shred as hard as we could on our backcountry setups – which wasn’t too hard.
We made a new local friend named Matt who showed us all around and crushed us on every run.
Hiking up to Terminator 1 was a hoot as there was a ski patroller with a “Pee Here” sign that we couldn’t get over (the sign is so that men don’t pee all over the hike and summit of T1 and focus the pee in one place to make the experience better for all :).
We interviewed her at the top of T1 and she played into all of our puns and had a few of her own.
I do think that the “Pee Here” sign is 100% endemic to Kicking Horse and nowhere else…
T1 held some challenging skiing but still steep and damn fun.
Laps off the skier’s left of the chairlift run into Fuze Bowl were chalky, creamy, and delicious.
We did 3 full top to bottom, 4,000-vertical-foot runs that were beyond fun.
This place has the 4th largest vertical drop in North America at 4,133-vertical-feet and every foot of it is a blast.
No lines, no one out.
Sunny then cloudy then a touch of fairytale snow.
I couldn’t stop saying “I love this place,” and couldn’t stop smiling.
I think I need to move to Golden…
Today, we hopped in a Bell 407 helicopter and flew out to a remote mountain hut for a week of hut life and backcountry skiing.
Thanks, BC!
