The ski season has begun and while the U.S. is off to somewhat of a rocky start (pun intended), Europe is seeing a fantastic start to the season across the Alps. According to British newspaper The Telegraph, it is the best start to the season in 20 years, although we have not been able to independentely verify this claim.
Up to half a meter of snow (20 inches) has fallen so far this week across different regions in the Alps and another half meter is in the forecast for the next 48 hours for many areas.
Currently there are around 60 ski resorts open in Europe, including Val Thorens and Tignes in France, Kaunertal, Stubai, and Pitztal in Austria, Davos Klosters and Corviglia in Switzerland, Cortina d’Ampezzo and Livigno in Italy, and Sinswang in Germany.
Here are the biggest snow depths at the moment across the aforementioned countries:
Germany:
Zugspitze 214 centimeters / 84 inches
Austria:
Kaunertal 250 centimeters / 98 inches
Switzerland:
Lauchneralp Lötschental 206 centimeters / 81 inches
Italy:
Matterhorn Ski Paradise 200 centimeters / 79 inches
France:
Les Menuires 240 centimeters / 95 inches
