The beach cities of southern California are not without crowds during warmer months, however the locals still maintain a small town mentality especially when there is a swell. Immediately walking into the iconic Sugar shack Breakfast joint where many employees are top level surfers you overhear surfers trading shifts, joking about finally getting powerful waves locally.
One can only imagine when word of possible super storm was looking to bless our shores, the deep-rooted surf culture was buzzing. Spectators made plans to visit the infamous Newport Wedge, local talent called in sick making sure not to miss this rare chance. The timing was ideal.
ASP world tour surfers in the area preparing for the Lowers Pro mixed in with local chargers made for visual experiences that you only see in frothy overseas surf movies. Well, the swell was worth the hype; the ocean was absolutely alive and delivering beatings to everyone!
Close friend Rudy Palmboom, South African pro, cashed in claiming the waves felt like Hawaii’s Pipeline: everyone agreed. Surfers from San Diego all the way to Malibu paddled into the best swell we’ve enjoyed in thirty something years.
