A modest early-season snowfall blanketed Australia’s alpine ski resorts over the past 24 hours, offering a brief taste of winter just weeks before the official start of the season. Perisher, Hotham, and Thredbo all reported a light coating of fresh snow at their upper elevations, though totals remained just under 5 centimeters (2 inches). With snowmaking operations underway and temperatures dropping overnight, the snowfall provided a welcome white boost for resorts preparing for winter operations.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast calls for mostly dry conditions across the Snowy Mountains for the remainder of the week. Monday brought areas of morning frost and partly cloudy skies, with a slight chance of showers limited to the eastern slopes. Snow chances remain slim in the coming days—just 10% at elevations above 1,800 meters through Tuesday and Wednesday, with snow possible only during higher-elevation showers midweek.
Longer term, a slow-moving trough along the New South Wales coast is expected to bring rain and wind to coastal areas, but is unlikely to impact the alpine interior. For now, the high pressure ridge over the southeast looks to keep the mountains dry, with only brief windows of snow flurries forecast above 1,700 to 1,900 meters later this week.
