Report from May 16, 2025
2 days ago, we saw this zone on our hike up University Peak and I loved the look of it.
Convoluted, spines, chutes, and open faces all in one zone.
We came back for it the next day, yesterday.
2 days ago, it was cool in the morning.
Yesterday was hot.
We battled up that first brutal pitch and felt calm again on the valley floor.
It was only about an hour or so to the base of the zone.
Another 2 hours to climb up it put us on top after 3 hours.
We saw a ridiculous face out back that we hope to come back for…
For the first run, I skied the obvious chute and it was money.
Soft, supple corn snow that allowed for speed and speed-check turns.
I asked Tall Carl what the plan was at the bottom.
“Put the skins on and go right back up there.”
So I did.
I was tired and it was blisteringly hot.
I did a variation of the chute I skied the first run and I liked it even more.
About 4,000-vertical-feet of skiing.
We were all fired up and dropped down to the valley floor for burritos and ice cream.
Glenn’s taco truck was closed but the Eastern Sierra Creamery was open.
Mint Chunk.
Then up to Bishop for sumptuous Taqueria Mi Guadalajara burritos.
We then rounded up the crew for my 4th annual bachelor party weekend and had a big group dinner at Mammoth Brewing to start off the weekend’s festivities.
Great day.
Thanks, California!
