Chloe Kim and Maddie Mastro made snowboarding history by becoming the first women to land a double cork 1080 in competition during a U.S. one-two finish at the Laax Open in Switzerland. The feat was confirmed by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), underscoring a milestone in halfpipe progression.
Kim, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, secured the win with cab double cork 1080s in both of her runs. Her first-run score of 96.50 dominated the competition. โI was having such a hard time in practice, and I really wanted to show you guys my cab double,โ Kim said during the broadcast, as reported by NBC Sports. โSo happy I was able to put it down for yโall.โ
Mastro, also a two-time Olympian, followed closely with a score of 94.50, highlighted by a frontside double cork 1080 in her second run and her signature double crippler (two backflips). South Koreaโs Gaon Choi, just 16 years old, claimed third place with 93.25 points. Choi, inspired by Kim, previously made waves in 2023 when she became the youngest X Games snowboard halfpipe champion, surpassing Kimโs record.
Kimโs latest victory at the Laax Open adds another milestone to her storied career. In 2018, she became the first woman to land a frontside double cork 1080 in practice, though she fell short in competition at the 2019 World Championships. Saturdayโs triumph marks her first win since last yearโs Winter X Games, where she made history as the first woman to land a 1260 in competition.
This achievement also brought back memories of the last U.S. one-two finish in a World Cup snowboard halfpipe event, which Kim and Mastro delivered at the December 2018 Copper Mountain Grand Prix. Their performances at the Laax Open clearly show the continued evolution of womenโs snowboarding.
