The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has named Azerbaijan as its first-ever Global Destination Partner, launching a multi-year partnership designed to elevate the central asiatic country’s presence on the international snow sports stage. Starting with the 2025–26 season and running through 2029–30, Azerbaijan will serve as a premium partner of all FIS World Championships. The agreement also grants Azerbaijan title sponsorship rights for the FIS World Cup circuits in Moguls, Aerials, Ski Cross, and Snowboard Cross, as well as presenting partner status for the Nordic Combined World Cup, as reported by the FIS in a press release.
The partnership, signed with Azerbaijan’s State Tourism Agency, aims to go beyond traditional sponsorship. Central to the agreement is a shared focus on promoting Azerbaijan as a legitimate winter sports destination. The country is home to ski areas such as Shahdag Mountain Resort, which sits over 2,300 meters above sea level and features FIS-certified slopes.
“This partnership ticks all the boxes,” FIS President Johan Eliasch said. “It brings value to all of our disciplines, supports the development of snow sports from recreational to elite, and connects us to an emerging market with major potential.”
Azerbaijan’s tourism leaders hope to use the global visibility from this collaboration to introduce a broader audience to the country’s mountain landscapes and winter offerings. Fuad Naghiyev, Chairman of the State Tourism Agency, said the country has developed strong infrastructure and gained experience in hosting international events—and now aims to do the same in winter sports.
