Aspen Highlands, CO, Weekend Report: Highland Bowl and Temerity

Report from February 11 & 12, 2023 Somehow, I ended up in Aspen on Saturday morning. It snowed a few inches on Thursday, so I knew the conditions would be solid. This was not a trip I planned far in advance, but from the start, I knew I was heading straight to Highlands. Related: VIDEO: How to Hike the Highland […]

Jay Peak, VT, and Other East Coast Ski Areas Closed Today Due to Extreme Cold and Wind

Sometimes New England is just cold. The 0 degree day is a fact of life, and you have to learn to just appreciate it for the lack of crowds. This is different than that. The National Weather service has put out several Wind Chill Warnings across the Northeast. They all warn of wind chill temperatures of -30 to -50 degrees […]

Sugarbush, VT, Report: Classic East Coast Saturday

Report from January 28, 2023 Saturday was a pretty classic East Coast Ski Day. It wasn’t a powder day, but we got a ton of snow earlier in the week, so the snow was soft enough and the rocks were covered enough that almost the entire mountain was skiing well. It was windy, but the lifts were all running. There […]

After First Responders Asked iPhone 14 Users To Disable The New “Crash Detection” Feature, Apple is Now Attempting to Fix The Issue

In September, Apple released the iPhone 14, and one of its most-touted new features is that it can detect a car crash and automatically dial 911. Unfortunately, this feature seems to have many false positives, especially from those who partake in winter sports, and now many first responders are now asking residents to disable the feature. Crash detection works by […]

Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC, Reopens After a Month-Long Closure

Mont-Sainte-Anne reopened on Sunday for the first time since Mid-December. The resort was forced to close by the Quebec government after a cabin plummeted from the gondola on December 10th. Related: Gondola Cabin Plummets to Ground in Canada The resort was given approval to reopen on Saturday, although the ill-fated gondola is still closed, and it appears the cabins have […]

Stratton, VT, Report: Spring Skiing in Late December

Report from Friday, December 30th I woke up this morning, checked the forecast, and it was 52 degrees out at the base of Stratton. After hardpack conditions for the last few days, this thaw is something I really have been looking forward to. Stratton has received 43 inches of snow this year, and some of it has stuck around in […]

The Northeast is Getting Dumped On Right Now (20″+ in some areas)

After a slow start to the season so far, the Northeast is finally getting a big snowfall—and it’s a huge storm. Stratton, VT, is already reporting 16 inches of snow has fallen, and most forecasts are projecting that at least another 8 inches will fall tonight. These storm totals are fairly consistent at high elevations across Vermont, and slightly lower […]

The Northeastern Ski Areas Opening This Week

It has been a strange start to winter in the Northeast this year. In just the last few days we have gone from beach weather to morning temperatures below freezing. This sudden drop in temperatures has also coincided with a moderate (4-6″) snowstorm in Northern New England. The upshot of this is that Ski Areas are finally starting to blow […]
