Big Mountains, Decent Snow and Skiing in July | Portillo, Chile Trip Report

Skiing in the Southern Hemisphere is an experience. There is something about skiing fresh snow in July that doesn’t compute in your head…its supposed to be sunny, I’m supposed to be at the beach or something, but rather I’m skiing 5″ of fresh snow in late July in Chile…weird. Once you get over the mind block that says this isn’t right, its nothing but good, muy bueno. If you want to ski in the Southern Hemisphere during the North American summer you have two […]

Portillo, Chile Conditions Report: Chalky, Variable & a Whole lot of Fun

Despite a severe lack of snow, and a opening date that kept being pushed back, Portillo is skiing great right now. Two weeks ago Portillo saw almost 6.5 feet, allowing the resort to open for the first time all season. Since then snow has been scarce, but what is left is holding up well. The groomers are fast, and certain […]

El Colorado, Chile Conditions Report: Fast, Rocky and Firm

Two weeks ago El Colorado and most of Central Chile received their first significant snowfall of the season, finally allowing the resorts to open after a long wait. Nearly two weeks later though without snow and El Colorado and neighboring Valle Nevada and La Parva are in dire need of snow once more. Over the weekend El Colorado was fast and icy, half the time it was a slide for life rather than actually making turns. None the less, skiing […]

The Man on the White Horse who Saved the Sierra Nevada

“If you’ve seen one Redwood, you’ve seen them all…” that is not the kind of thing you would expect to hear from someone who single handedly “saved the Sierra.” But said gentleman did in fact utter such a phrase whilst residing in the White House. Years prior however, while governor of California, said gentleman, Ronald Reagan rode out into the Sierra Nevada Mountains on a white horse and made a decision that would forever impact the Sierra Nevada […]

Whitewater Rafting, Flyfishing & General Debauchery | Klamath River, CA Trip Report

The Klamath River runs from Klamath Falls Oregon down through Northern California with its outlet into the Pacific by Klamath, California. It offers some of the best whitewater on the west coast, along with some good fishing. A few weeks ago I took a lil trip up there with my friends Blake and Ryan, where we met […]

Squaw Conditions Report: Spring Marches On

As spring drags on (month 3 I think) the skiing at Squaw continues to be good despite the high temperatures and severe lack of snow. Friday at Squaw offered firm and fast groomers in the morning, and soft corn and mank in the afternoon. The high temperatures this weekend will make getting out early the call, corduroy in the morning, corn in the afternoon, and beers before 4. […]

Sugar Bowl Conditions Report: Fun in the Sun

Despite a lackluster winter in Tahoe, the skiing is still pretty darn good. The 2 foot storm that hit the area last weekend left some good snow up high, unfortunately after a week of sun, and warm temperatures, a good portion of that has disappeared. None the less, the skiing is still ripping at Sugar Bowl, with firm ripable groomers in the morning, and afternoon corn abound. Sugar Bowl is skiing great right now, with cool temperatures in the morning the groomers are the call, while off-piste is a bit crunchy. By mid-afternoon the snow began to soften up making off trail an option, and corn filled groomers aren’t […]
