Blower Powder and Blue Sky’s in St.Anton, Austria

The cradle of alpine skiing St. Anton finally come’s alive with amazing light, blower powder after a long drought in November/December with barely any snow. The past week there has been quit a bit of precipitation that came partly as rain. Yesterday night it was cold and it snowed a good 10 cms all the way to the base and with the other 20-30 cms that we got this week there is decent base on most aspects now above 2000m. Up high in the alpine you can find up to 40 cms of fresh especially in east facing slopes and couliors where the strong westerly wind has deposited light dry pow […]

Sun, Fun & Powder in Obergurgl, Austria

December hasn’t really delivered the goods here in Austria but at higher elevations above 2400m there is a decent base and good snow conditions to be found. This doesn’t leave many options so we headed back to Obergurgl in the Ötztal one of our favorite spots to ride easy access backcountry. The terrain is gnarly and there is a ton of options available with short hikes. Thursday during the day and evening there was significant precipitation in most of western Austria. Due to the high temperatures it rained up to 2400m. Above that it snowed about a good 10cms. […]

Austria Conditions Report: Light, Dry, Cold Powder in Obergurgl

With most Austrian lower elevation ski resorts still closed and waiting for more snow. We headed back to Obergurgl/Hochgurgl which is one of the 4 non Glacier ski resorts that are currently open in the country. We have had some colder temps and precipitation in most parts of the Alps and it looks like winter is coming and here to stay. The forecast a mix of sun and clouds left us hopeful to get some decent visibility. With a significant snowfall at higher elevations there were 20cms of fresh pow above 2500m at all aspects of the mountain […]

Austria Conditions Report: Powder, Sun and Big Terrain

big ski terrain austria

November has been a very unusual month in Austria. It’s been the warmest November ever recorded in weather history (in 240 years). That of course meant close to no snow at all in the mountains except of course on the glaciers and at higher elevations above 2500m. So we have been waiting and praying for colder weather and snow. Temperatures have still been quit high but freezing level has dropped to about 2000m now in early December. On the 2nd of December it finally snowed a 10-15 cms mostly in the […]

Las Lenas, Argentina Conditions Report: Good Up High, Bad Down Low | The End Is Near…

Looks like the season might be coming to an end soon. Rumors have spread that the 8th of September has been set as the closing date. Last week was warm and we enjoyed spring skiing conditions. The storm that was supposed to hit Las Leñas last weekend with about a half a meter of snow was a disappointment. It started to snow a little bit on Saturday around noon and continued on and off until Sunday. But it didn’t really accumulate in the valley, but up high and in Valle Hermoso it snowed quit a lot. On Sunday pretty much everything was closed due to high winds […]

Las Lenas, Argentina Backcountry Report: Cliff Hucking in Valle Hermoso

While on the hunt for big pow, babes, and asados, we found ourselves in Valle Hermoso, at a back country refugio in the middle of the Andes, camping for a few days with a really good crew. Valle Hermoso is the neighboring valley close to the Chilean border and it holds a lot more snow, even though it is at the same elevation as the Las Leñas valley. The river supplied us with fresh drinking water and an old abandoned hut provided us with shelter. We arrived at Sunset on […]

Big Mountain Powder Report: Las Lenas, Argentina

After getting about a foot of fresh snow on Wednesday, August 6th, 2014, the Marte chair opened again on Thursday. Super excited for another Marte powder day! Unluckily, the wind really worked the snow pack the night before and the south face of Marte wasn’t nearly as good as it was on Monday, August 4th, 2014. It was wind packed and wind “carton” and some pow patches. Eduardo and Cerro Martin were still in really good shape with great pow. It warmed up a lot […]

Las Lenas, Argentina Conditions Report: Working for Powder

I was a bit shocked when i arrived at Las Leñas, I have never seen so little snow here in the past 6 years. But my friends soon assured my that up high there was still good powder to be found (Torreciallas, Entre Rios etc.). Not sure that i wanted to commit to a season pass on my first day two of my friends and me decided to go touring at lower elevation on the other side of the valley not using any lifts. There is a very sheltered area mostly south facing called la Oficina that usually holds […]
