Dylan Cautela

Born and raised in the state of Maine, sculpted from ice and built to rip! When I'm not at work playing in the dirt or braaaappping the old chainsaw I enjoy hiking, biking, skiing, and the general great outdoors. There is ample beauty to be explored in my great home state (and all around the east) but most days I find myself yearning for the adventure of the wild wild west and foreign countries unknown, which happen to be my winter playgrounds.

Snowfall Totals Downgraded For Storm Heading To The Western U.S.

Stellar

Sunday, Powderchasers released their update on the impending storms for this coming week. Unfortunately, in most locations, the probability for a good dose of powder has been downgraded. The models are showing a good chance of cold air returning to most of the west come midweek, but the moisture coming off of the Pacific will not be as heavy as expected. The […]

Squaw Valley, CA Announces November 23rd Opening Day

Looking good

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have announced their November 23rd opening day. Mother Nature has delivered some good early season snow in the Lake Tahoe region for October, but since then, it has slowed down a bit. Weather and temps have been mild and very much like fall for the beginning of November, but a shift in the pattern next week could make […]

VIDEO: Cody Townsend Lets Loose While Skiing Untouched Fall Lines In Nevada’s Ruby Mountains

I want to couloir hunt!!!

Cody Townsend and crew went on a mission throughout the Ruby Mountains in Nevada to search for the next Terminal Cancer type of couloir. For those who don’t know, Terminal Cancer is an extremely aesthetic couloir with beautiful tall rock walls and a consistent pitch along the whole descent, which is rather long and narrow. Townsend may not have found […]

Weather Pattern Change Could Bring Snow to Mountains Across the Western US

It should look like this again from these storms.

Powderchasers have reported a long term weather outlook which brings an end to the ridge that has created unseasonably warm temperatures across much of the western US. Yesterday, Washington State broke its previous record for latest date in the year to reach over 70. November 4th, 1949 when it reached 74 degrees in Seattle was the latest date on record prior to this. […]

Utah’s Great Salt Lake Under Major Threat

Buffalo!

NASA recently released two satellite images, taken five years apart, of the Great Salt lake in Utah. Major signs of decreased water levels are evident. It’s no surprise that water levels are down in large part because of the significant droughts that the American West has seen these past five years, but droughts are a part of the climate and not uncommon. […]

VIDEO: Top 5 All Time Crashes During the Freeride World Tour Competition

Hopefully conditions are good, they're looking favorable.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Freeride World Tour has released this video of the top 5 crashes during competition. Fortunately for these incidents, conditions were favorable and no major injuries occurred. However, this is not always the case. Often times, conditions are very poor and as riders pick their lines the conditions continue to deteriorate through the heavy traffic. But […]

US Forest Service Approves Backcountry Ski Location in Southern Vermont

Not too shabby.

The United States Forest Service has approved the South of Route 9 Integrated Resource Project, which includes opening some land of a former ski resort for backcountry access. The plan was proposed by students and the Land Stewardship Program (LANDS) at the University of Vermont who conducted research regarding non-native invasive species overgrowing in portions of the research site. As part of an […]

Top Early Season Snowfall Totals Across North America

Ripping that big ol' backside pow slash

With winter dropping in on some of the mountains in North America for another quick visit to close out an already wonderfully white October, it’s time to prep for the upcoming season by taking a look at the existing snowpacks. A handful of ski resorts in California just picked up a few extra inches of white (see Snowfall Totals for more […]
