Alta Ski Area, UT, Surpasses 500 inches of Total Snowfall This Season

After receiving over a foot of new snow in 24 hours, Alta Ski Area has officially crossed the 500-inch mark for the season, hitting 505 inches of snowfall as of April 2, 2025. The milestone caps off a storm-heavy March that brought more than four feet of fresh snow in a single week and has helped turn around what began as a sluggish start to winter in Utah’s Wasatch Range.

The season got off to a slow and somewhat unstable start, with early snow totals well below average and a snowpack prone to avalanches. Several fatalities were reported across the region in December and January as backcountry conditions remained precarious. Since then, however, consistent snowfall and cold temperatures have helped stabilize the snowpack, with current totals in the central Wasatch sitting near seasonal averages.

Known for its deep powder and loyal community of skiers, Alta consistently ranks among North America’s snowiest resorts. While 500 inches is not unusual for Alta in a strong snow year, the timing of this season’s snowfall has made the benchmark feel especially hard-earned. February saw a stretch of dry weeks that left skiers wondering if the magic would return—but March delivered, restoring confidence just in time for the prime window of spring skiing.

Alta will close for the 2024-25 season on Sunday, April 20. For skiers still debating a spring trip, this week’s totals might be the nudge they need.
