Saturday started out gusty and brisk but the lower temperatures kept the snow in great shape into the late afternoon at Alpine Meadows, California.

Earlier in the week, a cold Spring storm brought a dusting of snow to the Sierra, leaving 3-6 inches at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows (SVAM).

Squaw Valley’s snow report indicated the resort reached the 300″ inches mark of total snowfall on the season.

It felt like Spring at the base but the winds were ripping on the ridges enough for Ski Patrol to keep Summit Six on wind hold.

The snow was fast and the crowds were kept at bay given the chilly temps and wind.

The first few runs were bulletproof and loud but the South and East facing slopes were eventually softened nicely by the April sun.

We mostly lapped Roundhouse to Alpine Bowl, which was the only way to the top.

Although the backside lifts of Lakeview and Sherwood appeared closed for the season, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows (SVAM) is now the only Lake Tahoe resort that remains open.

Most California ski resorts had their closing days on Sunday, April 18th, which was a warmer day with only a slight breeze.

If conditions permit, the plan is for Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows to stay open until Memorial Day weekend, along with Mammoth Mountain.

Preparation for the construction of the California Express Gondola that will connect Squaw Valley and Alpine is already underway, which will create the 3rd largest ski resort in North America.

Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley have always had their respective followings and their own unique vibe.

It is yet to be seen how the connecting gondolas will affect the experience.

Hopefully, last week and Saturday were not the last gasps of Winter.

Unsettled weather is in the forecast for this week, so hopefully we can ski and ride well into May.
