50th Avalanche Death in the Alps on Monday

The European Alps just experienced their 50th avalanche death of the 2014/15 winter season. 

The most recent avalanche death occurred on Monday, February 2nd, 2015, at 6,223-feet while skiing the classic freeride descent of the Val Segnas in the off-piste terrain of the Disentis ski resort in the canton (state) of Graubünden, Switzerland.  The avalanche danger was rated as “Considerable” or 3 out of 5 at the time of the avalanche.

This was the 9th avalanche death in Switzerland since Saturday.  That’s 9 avalanche in Switzerland in 3 days.  Switzerland has had 18 avalanche deaths this winter.  The Alps have had 50 avalanche deaths this winter.

Last Saturday, January 31st, 2015, 8 people died in 4 avalanches in one day.  On that terrible day, 5 skiers died in one avalanche on the Piz Vilan region of Switzerland.  These skiers were with a guide and that guide is now reportedly being charged with manslaughter.
