After a race training session on June 28th, three members of the Italian women’s ski team tested positive for COVID-19. The Italian Winter Sports Federation reported positive tests for one racer and two coaches. While two members are asymptomatic and quarantining as a precaution, one coach has been hospitalized with a fever.
The team has been training at Stelvio Glacier on the Italian and Swiss border in Northern Italy. While the Italian Winter Sports Federation didn’t release the names of those who have tested positive, the Women’s World Cup team will be returning home for quarantining. The rest of the team will continue to train as usual, even with the three new positive tests.
Italy was one of the first European countries to be hit hard by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. They have already canceled the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Finals that were scheduled for March 2020 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. On top of the recent positive tests, they recently requested to postpone the 2021 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup to March 2022 as a precaution. An official announcement regarding the 2021 world cup is expected on July 1st.
