How legit are the terrain parks and halfpipe at Sierra-at-Tahoe?
Enough so to serve as the stomping grounds to many a world-class athlete.
From groms to Olympians, Sierra-at-Tahoe’s terrain parks and halfpipe allow every level of park enthusiast to hone their craft.
Carefully curated and painstakingly maintained, the parks have even earned a Top 10 ranking by those in the know.
Halfpipe, boxes, rails and jibs … terrain parks are a bona fide playground for snowboarders and skiers to send it big and practice new moves.
Sierra-at-Tahoe offers six unique parks, a nationally recognized halfpipe, and a full time border-cross run. Here’s the rundown:
Terrain Parks
Burton Progression Park: As the name itself implies, the Burton Progression Park is perfect for beginners with small jumps and low-to-the-ground boxes to get a feel for the action.
Broadway Park: A great spot to see and be seen from the Easy Rider chair, Broadway has small to medium features to up your game.
Upper Snowshoe: Once you’ve mastered the features in the Burton Progression Park and gathered up some confidence, Upper Snowshoe will help you take it to the next level with grabs, small spins and jump flow.
Upper Main: This park is perfect once you’re ready for more. It features plenty of small to medium rails as well as small to medium jumps.
Bashful: Comprised of both an upper and lower level, this long park ride is loaded: hips, rails, boxes, butter pads, pole jams, creeper towers and jumps galore.
The Alley: The park crew jams turns over the speakers as you tool down this park run. Plenty of jumps, jibs, and other features to send it big.
Halfpipe
This nationally recognized halfpipe is complete with it’s own lift to supply all the laps you can handle without any wasted energy.
“With Snow Park Technologies dialing in the parks, the South Shore’s only halfpipe (it’s even shaded to boot), and a new Burton Riglet park for groms, it’s nearly impossible to not be stoked at Sierra.”
Smokey Bordercross
For a little healthy competition drop into the full time BorderX course. Race friends around banked turns and well-placed rollers.
Sierra-at-Tahoe Pro Athletes and Team Riders
Have you ever topped the podium at the Winter Olympics? Me neither. However, three athletes from Sierra-at-Tahoe can make that claim and another is a champion in his own right.
Maddie Bowman grew up on the slopes of Sierra-at-Tahoe. In the 2014 Winter Olympics she won the first Olympic gold medal in women’s halfpipe freestyle skiing. Never a stranger to a podium finish, she’s also won seven X Games medals including four gold. This February she returns to the Olympics Games once again to defend her title.
Jamie Anderson also took her very first turns on the slopes of Sierra-at-Tahoe. She won the first ever women’s Olympic Slopestyle gold medal. She, too, has crushed it at the Winter X Games making 12 podium appearances, five of them gold. Along with an ESPN ESPY award, Rider of the Year, Dew Tour Championships, and Burton Open Championships, Jamie hopes to defend her Olympic gold medal this February in the PyeongChang, South Korea, Winter Olympics.
Hannah Teter is a 3-time Olympian. She captured the women’s snowboarder gold medal for the halfpipe in 2006, the silver in 2010, and just missed the podium in 4th place in 2014. An additional eight-time World Cup medalist, this champion grew up on the slopes of Okemo, Vermont, but now calls Sierra-at-Tahoe home.
Kyle Smaine is a freestyle skier who won gold at the FIS World Ski Championships. With the 2018 Winter Olympics just around the bend, he’s hoping to pull up in the rankings to make the squad that heads to PyeongChang, South Korea, this February.
“Just trying to live the good life because if your not having fun doing something then it’s probably not worth doing.”
Kyle Smaine
